    1. MillionthVector this stuff is phenomenal :p I actually have a favor to ask, Do you do commissions or are you open to contributing unique work to a game I'm making? I tried making spaceships and stations myself but alas to no avail, I'm better at background stuff and planets/moons/galaxies :p Anyway if you interested send an email to djhall1990@hotmail.com :)

  2. Great work!
Most of them are pixel art I think.
Do You possibly do 3D models for any of those?
I ask because if You do, than it would be awesome to render normal maps. Than in top down game with simple bump mapping those would react with light sources for great effect.

    1. O Yea. You do 3D models. Silly Me. :)

      Delete
    2. Hmmm hadn't thought of that, thanks for the suggestion, I should remember to do that for future ones, thanks.

      Delete
    3. No problem. I would love to see the results.
I never had the time to prepare normal-maps for anything else than asteroids, and all my ships are pixel art, so I resigned from implementing bump-mapping just for asteroids.
If You happen to post one ship with normal-maps than I'll definitely use it to implement bum-mapping.

    4. New faction released with normal maps.

      Delete
    5. Damn You. Now I have to get to work on bump-mapping. :)
      One note though.
If you prepare normal-maps then ship image should be rendered without light source, or with light source somewhere around vertical axis. For the lighting on ship to be uniform on sides.
      Great work! Thanks.

  7. Hi!

I'm developing a HTML5 2D multiplayer space game for learning programming and am using your sprites :) Take a look:

    http://img1.picload.org/image/opoogla/bildschirmfoto.jpg

http://img4.picload.org/image/opodpri/tor.jpg // I even modified your station sprite into a jump gate! Finally got rid of my fucking boring circle :) Couldn't find any free jump gate sprite on the net, so this is fine for now.

I especially love your red faction6 ships. They strongly remind me of the game "Gratuitous Space Battles". This game has the best spaceship sprites i ever saw. Take a look and hold your socks:
    http://gratuitousspacebattles.wikia.com/wiki/Special%3aNewFiles

The game has different factions and many different ship classes - from tiny fighters up to huge destroyers. If you decide to make more free ship sprites, take the sprites of Gratuitous Space Battles as your main inspiration. They rock!

Oh and by the way: Can you resave the first faction6 ship? It's blurred, like you vertically resized it 1 pixel.

And i wanted to ask: How to credit you? It would be more helpful if you would release your stuff under a license. The first choice is Creative Commons. There you can decide what can be done with the stuff and what not and people always must credit you. :)

Here is the address of my game, if you want to take a closer look at how awesome your sprites make it look:

    http://websocket.bonsaiheld.org/

Keep up the work! Please, haha :p

    Regards
    Dani

    1. Yes the Gratuitous Space Battles graphics are quite amazing, these ships are actually partially inspired by them.

As per your request I have sharpened and re-uploaded the big faction 6 spaceship, odd, it did seem a bit blurrier than the rest.

As for credit, just put a mention of MillionthVector somewhere.

I tried your game out, it seems like a really good game, amazing job on it so far!

  8. > As per your request I have sharpened and re-uploaded the big faction 6 spaceship, odd, it did seem a bit blurrier than the rest.

Hmm... No, you have to resave it from the original source (3D model?). Now one can see that it's sharpened - it's not better, the flaw is just a different one now. Compare the ship to the others, you clearly see the sharpening on all lines. :)

    > As for credit, just put a mention of MillionthVector somewhere.

Yeah, well... You know, the problem is that people who use your free sprites can't feel save (from lawyers) because you as the creator can always withdraw your permission any time you want. That's not possible when you release your free stuff under a free license as the license at release or when one downloaded your stuff counts. And you're as safe with it as without - it's just better for people who use it. Of course if you want it like that, that's your right. It just makes it very unsafe to use your stuff, but if that's your wish, then it's ok. Also, you don't write if one is allowed to redistribute modified versions of your ships (while still crediting you)... You know it's all complicated and unsave without a license.

That's why i recommended Creative Commons. It is in fact Copyright, but you as a creator have much more freedom to choose and decide what is allowed and what now. Plus it gives people safety. Here for example, the CC BY-SA license: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ (SA = ShareAlike, it means that people must release modifications under the same or a almost identical license, you can even combine that with NC, which prohibits a commercial use and other stuff). The sense of CC is to make Copyright easy (readable for non lawyers) while being save. It's widely used on the internet and offline by all kinds of artists! :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm, I'll have to see what I can do about the spaceship, not sure why it came out blurry in the first place.

But I have done what you suggested with the license, and released it with a CC-by license.

      Delete
    2. Okay tried re-rendering from the original 3D source file, is it better now?

      Delete
  9. Also there's a good site for free and open material, where you could upload your free sprites (only with a license though): http://opengameart.org/ All of the stuff there can be used for private use any almost everything even commercially, it only depends on which license you as the creator choose. This makes it perfectly clear to people what they are allowed to and everyone can feel save. :)

  13. Hey hey :)

Your Faction6 spaceships are finally fine! I wanted to pack them now, but you gotta resave the normalmap as here still the old one is listed. It's a bit bigger than the actual ship image.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Or wait, i just resized the normalmap. I was worries that it blurrs but it's fine and as sharp as the other normalmaps. :)

Will upload your faction6 pack to OpenGameArt now.

  14. Someone asked about the 3D model files of the ships. What should i reply? I guess all ships with normalmaps are originally 3D, aren't they? Want to release them, too?

Also, take a look at this: http://opengameart.org/content/faction7-spaceship-att5-3d Someone modelled your faction7 ships in a simpler variation. :)

Oh and by the way, your Captchas are pretty tough... Ugh. 4. try now. :(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm, the thing with releasing the 3D models of the ships is that they were made primarily to be rendered from above, many of them are garbage from just about any other angle, to give you an example of what I mean, I rendered one of the ships from the sides:

      http://www.pasteall.org/pic/show.php?id=67374

That's neat people like the ships enough to make them in 3D, thanks for that link. :D

Sorry about the Captchas, I don't know if there's anything I can do about them though.

    2. And mine also uses one of the newest ships. A fuckin great corvette (small destroyer) with 5 cannons. So awesome :) Hahaha! I want huge and strong destroyer ships in the later game with like 10 or 20 weapons for epic battles. :3 Only playable by CEOs (guild/clan owners) for balancing reasons though.

  16. This is, by the way, how the normalmaps could look in HTML5 2D: http://normalmap.bonsaiheld.org/ Move the mouse to change the light. I can encourage anyone to try the normalmaps, it's just an awesome effect. Imagine lasers and other stuff flying by and showing their lights. :D The code of the light.js used may be very messy, so i don't know if this possible with higher performance. At me a whole game in 2D Canvas would lag like hell. But in 3D mode it should be always fine. :) And yeah, since one can make 2D games in 3D mode too...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's quite interesting, a tad laggy even using a semi-decent (but somewhat old) graphics card, but it looks like it's 3D. Would love to see a game made with the normal maps. :D

      Delete
    2. I might try to include this better light.js in my game somehow... :))) Gotta play around with it and check if that is possible and still runs smooth. The whole process of this is very resource hungry because in 2D canvas this is done with plain pixel manipulation, so by iterating through every single pixel of a whole image, instead of a simple (texture) layer like it would be in 3D Canvas/WebGL mode. :/ I doubt that it will run smooth in my game because of so many particles at the same time. In those demos it's only one single light source...

    3. Tried the new demo out, it looks really nice, hope you get it working, I'd love to see it.

  17. I use some of your free sprites for my first little PC game, only for private fun and to learn how to do. Most of your sprites and models looks great. One of my favorites is the Giant Submarine, unbelievable! So thank you for your work and to have it for free. And if you don't know what to do :-) - I'm still searching for some large (width) ships (maybe 600 x 200 pixels) for the final boss fights. But no problem, if you are not interested. I think, it is always a lot of work for you. (And sorry for my bad english).

  21. Hello,

thank you for releasing this amazing work under CC! I'm working on space board game prototype and spent hours of unsuccessful work by trying to draw something like this. 1. Hello Rick, thank you very much!
Most of the sprites here were created with Blender3D, although sometimes I create ship sprites using Krita or Gimp. Generally when I draw sprites with Krita or Gimp I start with a black background and draw on one half, then mirror the result. For the Blender sprites I generally start with making the basic shape, adding detail then duplicate and modify for the rest of the ships in a series.
I hope this helps, if you have any more questions, let me know. :)

I just want to say that this is great art! I'm not sure if you know, but your art is on OpenGameArt.org, and it's licensed under the CC-BY 3.0 license, while when I download it, it claims 4.0. I'm assuming you want me to use 4.0, but just to be safe, I will include both in the credits. Do you mind if I include you in a text file distributed with the game that gives credits to everyone else? The title screen of my game will tell people where the file is so everyone can see the credits :)

Again, awesome art, and have a nice day :)

Your ships are giving life to this game :) I gave my best to make them swift and amusing. It is fascinating how they fit with classical music. Your name and web address is shown in credits each time the new game is started.

    Thanks a lot! :)

I am making an IOS Game and wanted to use several of your sprites, is that okay? I will give credit to your artwork of course, is their any specific way you wanted this recognition to appear?

    Thanks again.

    1. You're very welcome. Yes, any of the free sprites may be used, I'm not picky about credit, you can pretty much do whatever you want there, the main thing is I like to be credited as "MillionthVector", but that's about it.

    1. Wow, the creative commons license I applied to this set of graphics probably allows for selling them like that, if credit is given, which I don't see.
I appreciate your bringing this to my attention, but when I started posting these graphics online, I always had some idea they were going to be abused to some degree, I try not to get too involved with it though, but I do thank you for showing me this.

  73. Hello MillionthVector. I am amazed by your work. I'm making a game involving spaceships and I really like your designs. Would it be okay to use some of your designs in my game? I will make sure to give you credits at the "how to play" section. The game is almost done so if you want I could even sent you the android version for you to try. Than you in advance.
